Privacy policy

Amaurine is an Australian online jewellery retailer based in Sydney, New South Wales. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we give it to, and how you can get at it or correct it. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

What we collect

  • Order information — your name, email address, delivery address, billing address and phone number.
  • Payment information — handled by our payment providers. We see the last four digits of a card and whether the payment succeeded. We do not see or store your full card number.
  • Account information — if you create an account, your login details and order history.
  • Correspondence — what you write to us, and what we write back.
  • Marketing preferences — whether you have asked to hear from us, and what you have opened or clicked.
  • Site information — pages viewed, device and browser type, approximate location from your IP address, and how you arrived at the site.

We do not ask for information we do not need. We do not collect sensitive information as the Privacy Act defines it.

How we collect it

Mostly from you, when you order, write to us, subscribe or create an account. Some of it is collected automatically by cookies and analytics when you use the site. Occasionally we receive information from a service provider acting for us, such as a courier confirming a delivery.

Why we use it

To take, fill and deliver your order. To handle returns, repairs and enquiries. To take payment and to detect fraud. To improve the site and the range. To measure our advertising and decide who to show it to. To send you marketing if you have asked for it. And to meet our obligations under Australian tax, consumer and record-keeping law.

Who we share it with

We share what is necessary, with the people who need it to do their job for us:

  • Shopify, which hosts this store and processes payments.
  • Payment providers shown at checkout.
  • Couriers and postal services, to deliver your order and to trace it if something goes wrong.
  • Our manufacturing partners overseas. The partner workshop that makes your piece receives your name, delivery address and phone number to make and dispatch your order, and nothing else. It makes the piece to order, and the finished piece is checked by hand in Sydney before it is boxed and sent to you.
  • Our email platform, if you have subscribed.
  • Analytics and advertising providers. We use Shopify's built-in analytics, and we use the Meta pixel — a small piece of code from Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram. It tells Meta which pages you looked at here, what you added to your bag, when you started checkout and when you completed an order, along with an identifier for your browser. We use it for two things: to measure whether our advertising is working, and to show our advertising to people likely to want what we make.
  • Microsoft Clarity, an analytics and session-recording service run by Microsoft, which we use to see how this site is actually used. What it records is described under Session recording below.
  • Professional advisers and regulators, where the law requires it or allows it.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not rent, trade or otherwise hand it to anyone for their own marketing.

Information sent overseas

Some of the organisations above are outside Australia. Shopify's infrastructure, Meta, Microsoft and our principal manufacturing partner are based in the United States.

Our manufacturing partners overseas make each piece to order through partner workshops located outside Australia. Their terms do not identify the countries those workshops operate in, so we are not able to name them here rather than guess at them.

When we disclose your information overseas — including where a recipient's country cannot be identified — we take reasonable steps to see that it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Marketing

We only send marketing to people who have asked for it. Every message we send carries an unsubscribe link that works, and unsubscribing takes effect immediately. Unsubscribing from marketing does not stop the emails you need about an order you have placed.

Cookies

Cookies keep your bag full while you shop, keep you logged in, remember your preferences, and tell us how the site is being used. You can refuse or delete cookies in your browser settings — the store will still work, but the bag and the checkout may not behave the way they should.

The Meta pixel described above also sets a cookie, so Meta can connect an advertisement you saw on Facebook or Instagram to what you did here afterwards. If you would rather it did not, you can switch off personalised advertising in your Facebook or Instagram ad settings, or block third-party cookies in your browser. Neither changes what you pay or what you are able to buy from us.

Session recording

We use Microsoft Clarity to record visits to this site and play them back. A recording captures mouse movement, clicks and taps, scrolling, which pages you viewed and in what order, and your device and browser type. It rebuilds the page you saw — it is not a video of your screen, and it does not follow you to other sites.

What you type is masked before it is sent. Text you enter into a form — your name, email address, delivery address, phone number, and anything you write to us — is blocked out, so we can see that a field was filled in but not what was in it. Card numbers never appear at all, because payment is taken on Shopify's checkout, which Clarity does not record.

We use this to find the places where the site is confusing or broken, and to fix them. Clarity sets its own cookies so it can tell one visit from another; you can refuse or delete them in your browser settings the same way as any other cookie.

Keeping it safe

The site runs over an encrypted connection. Access to customer information is limited to the people who need it. We keep order records for as long as Australian tax and consumer law requires — generally seven years — and then dispose of them.

If a data breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

Getting at your information, and correcting it

Write to hello@amaurine.com and ask. You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct something that is wrong, or ask us to delete what we are not required to keep. We will respond within 30 days. If we ever decline a request, we will tell you why in writing.

Children

This store is not intended for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Complaints

If you think we have mishandled your personal information, write to hello@amaurine.com with "Privacy" in the subject line. We will investigate and reply within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can take it to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: oaic.gov.au, or 1300 363 992.

Changes

We may update this policy. The current version is always the one on this page.
